How to have gym confidence

Let's get real — gym anxiety is a thing! Sometimes the gym feels like an intimidating boys club, but it doesn't have to. Working out can be incredibly liberating — don't let gym anxiety get in the way. Working out releases serotonin which can boost your mood, improve your appetite, and affect your sleep cycle in a positive way. Whether you're a beginner or have years of experience, these tips can help you feel confident next time you go to the gym.

I grew up doing ballet, so I have always had an active lifestyle. However, in dance class, I was constantly surrounded by girls my age and didn’t doubt my abilities in the studio. But when I started working out in the gym, I was completely out of my element. The first few times I went to the gym alone, I was constantly thinking, “That person is staring at me, am I doing something wrong?” and “I shouldn’t try that new machine. What if I do something embarrassing?” I was so worried about what others were thinking. I didn’t realize that for the most part, everyone is so focused on their own fitness journey that they don’t have time to pick apart your every move.

My dad, being a football and baseball coach, taught me the basics of a solid workout routine. For this reason, I started my fitness journey with more knowledge and experience than many beginners. However, there are countless resources on the internet available for everyone to learn, no matter their starting level.

I got inspired to workout after following several “fitness influencers” on Instagram. Just to name a few, @krissycela, @whitneyysimmons, and @beth_fitnessuk are all strong women who motivate me with their fitness posts. They post the best tips and give you all the details you need for developing good form. I have learned that if you go into the gym with a distinct plan of what exercises you want to do, it becomes a lot easier to stop worrying about judgement and just have fun! Whether you want to do strength training, endurance training, yoga or Pilates, I truly believe that everyone can have a great, anxiety free time at the gym!

As silly as it may sound, the biggest tip I can give to someone who wants to feel confident in the gym is to put on a cute workout fit. On days when I feel painfully unmotivated, the only thing that gets me in the mood to go to the gym is picking out a gym outfit. Finding pieces that make you feel confident and strong is key. If you are going to be working out on a daily basis, it is ideal to have a variety of pieces to pick from, but it definitely does not mean you have to break the bank!

In fact, I buy a lot of my activewear second hand. Not only is this a sustainable option, but it’s a way to get name brands like Gymshark, Alphalete, and Balance Athletica for a cheaper price. Another great sustainable option is to support sustainable activewear brands. A few of my personal favorites range from the affordable Aerie, to the higher end Girlfriend Collective.

The first activewear trend that I would recommend trying out is bold patterns. So many activewear brands are coming out with matching sets in striking prints. Fun patterns are my go-to. Whether you wear the matching set as is, wear the pieces  separately with something more solid and neutral-or even mix patterns- this activewear statement is bound to give you an instant confidence boost!

My next favorite activewear trend is form fitting long sleeve cropped tops. The silhouette is flattering on every body type. Not to mention, long sleeve workout tops are perfect for the upcoming chilly weather!

My final tip for styling activewear is for those days when you just don’t feel like going to the gym. Whether you’re  feeling bloated or tired, rest assured, you can still look cute at the gym! Simply throw on a baggy graphic tee with your favorite leggings, or biker shorts, and add a baseball cap. Problem solved! I promise, the workout will lift your spirits!

Bottom line, no matter who you are or where you come from, having an active lifestyle will impact you in plenty of positive ways. I hope this article encourages you to hit the gym and look stunning while doing it!
