Breaking the Binary of Fashion

Gender cannot fit into just two categories — male and female — for gender is a spectrum. Placing boxes on a spectrum creates confusion that leaves a large group of people unseen in the eyes of many. If fashion and clothing are for everyone, then why is it expected for the vast spectrum of gender to fit in only two clothing categories: men and women?

Genderless fashion focuses more on the different sides of the spectrum, masculine and feminine, rather than male or female. Genderless fashion was often referred to as “androgynous” or “unisex,” however, according to Vogue Britain, those terms have the connotation that man or woman is replicating each other’s wardrobe. But genderless or “gender-neutral” fashion is more than that. Genderless fashion means wearing whatever clothing makes you comfortable no matter where you fall on the spectrum of masculine and feminine.

In our own lives, we can ignore the gender labels of clothing and find a more expansive catalog to choose from that brings us happiness and comfort. Fashion should be enjoyable, and there is a confidence that comes from being secure in yourself. Shopping genderless may help you find the clothes that give you confidence.

There are certain characteristics of clothing that can make pieces appear more masculine or feminine. Mix the two and you can find yourself somewhere in the middle.

Masculine elements in clothing are noted to be pieces with structure, weight, and harsh lines and edges. Masc clothing often squares up a person’s body shape due to wide shoulders and wide-legged pants.

Feminine features in clothes bring shape to the body by tending to be form-fitting, while  also allowing for ample movement. Feminine clothing creates soft lines through the body, soft edges, and is a complete contrast to masculine clothing.

You can apply both of these attributes to sell a look that fits your idea of gender and your style. Genderless fashion paves the way for more inclusivity in the world of fashion.
