Bridgerton-Inspired Looks: Channel Your Inner Duke or Duchess This Summer

Netflix’s original series, “Bridgerton,” blends the best parts of both the past and the present to create the most watched show of the season. The lovechild of “Gossip Girl” and a Jane Austen novel, the series squeezes enough drama and subplots into 8 episodes to make it a perfectly bingeable period piece romance.

Like most regency-era dramas, the plot is an examination of late 1800s social etiquette. There are suitors to be met, dances to be danced, and of course, beautiful dresses and opulent jewelry to be worn. What sets “Bridgerton” apart from other dramas in its genre is its candid inclusion of people of color. While minorities still are not at the center of most of the stories, they are sprinkled into the cast without a second thought, giving rare representation to many groups. Netflix has also announced a second season that promises even more representation starting with a South Asian woman as the lead.

Not only does “Bridgerton” make for great entertainment, but the show brings great style inspiration for the spring and summer. Arguably, the star of the show is the ornate corset. For a cinched waist and a vintage yet fresh take on the look, pair a corset over a slip dress or dress it down with a pair of your favorite jeans. Any way you decide to style it, a corset is the perfect way to elevate an outfit this season.

For a more comfortable look that screams ‘off-duty duchess,’ opt for a flowy maxi dress. The cottagecore look is timeless, and dresses are versatile. A white dress with puff sleeves or ruffles will give you a soft yet powerful air while a pastel colored dress will have you feeling one with nature.

Don’t forget the accessories. “Bridgerton” brings on the pearls and the gold, and it’s an easy way to look as expensive as you feel. A gold necklace or pearl earrings are both a classic choice that can make even a casual look look luxurious.

If dresses and corsets still seem too loud, take a more laid back approach and go for a unique button down. A quick trip to your local thrift store will give you plenty of options to choose from—neck-tie blouses, ruffled button downs, cascade shirts, and more. Pair the shirt of your choice with slacks or trousers for a preppy look, and accessorize with a waistcoat or vest. Add some jewelry, and you will look and feel like a modern day duke or duchess.

Bridgerton” is a ritzy, sexy, romantic drama that takes a fresh spin on an often overdone era. From it’s relatively diverse range of characters to its dedication to showcasing the fashion of the 19th century, it encourages viewers to remember a new past that doesn’t look so far off from the gossip, social mishaps, and even the style we experience today.
