Slowly but surely, we are moving on from the early 2000s aesthetic. However, there is a look that has yet to have crashed back on the shores of this decade: Shipwrecked.
A forlorn figurehead on the prow of a boat or a pirate lost at sea –– what could be more fabulous than that? By incorporating staples like tall boots, flowy clothes, and jewelry that looks like it could be peeking out of a treasure chest, you too could try out this look.
In 2002, Alexander McQueen shared his Spring Summer 2003 collection on the runway with an allure that fed into this mini-trend of the time. Vogue Runway sums it up as evoking “pirates and drowned maidens,” as the models walked. These looks focused on browns, detailed fabrics, and leather. In addition to smudged makeup, the models wore wet and messy hair.
On the red carpet, early 2000s celebrities like it-girls Britney Spears and Paris Hilton showcased similarly inspired looks. Focusing on asymmetry and torn knits, it was à la mode to look like you just got back from a desert island.
Like a pirate lost at sea, Scout wears a pleated flowing shirt with tall leather boots. She, of course, carries her treasure with her –– à la the jewels around her neck. With slicked strands of hair and braids, she evokes this ocean-faring semblance. Natalia also styles her hair in a wet-look, strands clinging to her face like she’s just escaped a storm. Additionally, she wears a detailed knitted shirt with her flowing skirt and boots. With a more damsel-in-distress inspiration, Mara wears a silky dress with dramatic jewelry and a netted shawl. She pairs this with tall black boots and a dainty ribbon in her hair.
Sure, the 2000s are phasing out, but a trend shift doesn’t require a total renovation of your closet. In the wake of low-waisted jeans, don’t forget to fish out your flowy blouses. Channeling the effortless savvy of the fashion greats, you too can turn heads and sink ships with the enchanting siren-song of the Shipwrecked aesthetic.
