Finding the motivation to go to the gym is sometimes more challenging than the workout itself. To combat exercise procrastination, styling a cute gym outfit will suffice. When creating an alternative workout fit, there are no limits. Step outside the gym outfit norm, with alternative athletics. Ladies and gents, let’s workout in style!

Alternative fashion is developed from the intersection of multiple microtrends and subcultures. Some of the substyles that compose but aren’t limited to alt fashion are; emo, goth, subversive, hip-hop, indie cottagecore, Japanese fashion (Lolita, kawaii, and Harajuku), grunge, cyberpunk, punk, 2000s fashion, and the list continues. While alt-fashion has roots relative to punk style, punk music is also a contributor. The free music expression influences freedom in fashion expression.

The alternative fashion aesthetic intends to break mainstream societal fashion norms. Alternative attire and accessories fail to align with trending items within the commercial industry. It is difficult to fully define alt-fashion because there is a variety of subcultures that make up the aesthetic. This style genre is mainly about self-expression and being who you are through clothing. There is no specific alternative look, but you can always spot an alternative outfit when you see one!

Throughout history, the trending workout garment changes about every decade. Over the years, workout style has seen a variety of different trending pieces and styles. Dating back to bloomers in the 1920s,  swimsuits, gym suits, leotards, sweats, and shorts with a t-shirt have also been utilized as activewear. Legwarmers have been a part of activewear since the 1980s worn during dancing and yoga to prevent muscle cramps.

Alternative gym wear consists of an assortment of accessories and vibrant colors. The outfit pieces can include any sort of clothing article that is comfortable and safe to exercise in. Fishnet tops, fur, and leg warmers are paired with sports bras and shorts. The fishnet shirts add color and an edgy feel to the look while also being comfortable for physical activities. The fur leg warmers are a signature alternative statement piece. Head coverings can include hats, earmuffs, fur headbands, and animal ears; Any design or headpiece that differs from the norm.

Intersecting alternative style clothing with gym fashion signifies alternative athletics! As an athlete, it can be hard to express creativity during sports. Alternative Athletics brings together fashion and athletics and encourages people to exercise. The variety of colors, patterns, and pieces make a statement outfit and dressing outside of the gym clothing norm. As an alternative athlete, the goal is to express your fashion sense in the gym, workout, and stand out!
