The continuous cycle of hair trends comes and goes; however, some manage to capture and redefine their audience by leaving a powerful impact. Micro bangs, or “baby bangs,” are a unique and daring hair trend that dates back to the 50s. This hairstyle consists of bangs that sit above the eyebrow or even on the middle of the forehead. This hairstyle reinvents the famous bang and adds a new layer of edginess to the cut.

Micro bangs gained popularity in the 50s due to the influence of Audrey Hepburn. She was seen sporting this look in a variety of films including “Roman Holiday” (1953), “Sabrina” (1954), and her most notable role, “Breakfast at Tiffany's” (1961). These films feed into the success of this hairstyle in the late 50s/early 60s and this influence was carried throughout the rest of the 19th century. Additionally, the beloved film, “Girl Interpreted” (1999), featured Angelina Jolie with this cut and allowed this style to carry into the 21st century.

Now, celebrities are contemporizing the style and showing up to red-carpet events showcasing them–leaving a huge impact on their audiences. Olivia Rodrigo, Zendaya, and Bella Hadid have all displayed this cut, causing their fans to follow suit and sport the hairstyle. The style has become a statement piece in the fashion world and continues to define the limits of hair.

This tricky hairstyle has raised the question of how one styles them. There are numerous options when it comes to styling the micro bang.

Shag paired with a baby bang:

These baby bangs are usually an inch off the forehead which is paired with a shag cut. They can be laid down by using products such as pomade.

Texturized baby bang:

Micro bangs are not limited to straight hair–they can be cut into any hair texture. Taylor Russell is a great example of micro bangs in curly hair; however, it does not emulate the same aesthetic that is seen on straight to medium waves. Most stylists recommend using products such as a leave-in spray or pomade.

Blunt cut:

This style displays straight bangs placed right above the eyebrows. Sometimes individuals will sweep these to the side by using a flat iron.

French cut:

This features a short French bob paired with a bang placed in the middle of the forehead. Individuals tend to part these bangs in the middle. Both Bella Hadid and Natalie Portman have sported this look.

The micro bang has revolutionized unconventional hairstyling. It has become a statement against hair norms and mainstream beauty traditions. Hairstyles like this are crucial to the fashion and beauty industry because they allow for individuality and self-expression. This trend serves as a reminder of the diversity in hair and beauty.
