The picnic has presented itself as the premier outdoor activity for the indoor person. As we look to the outdoors for social gatherings, the timeless picnic has risen in popularity on Instagram feeds and Pinterest boards across the nation.

Here’s a guide to planning your perfect picnic.

Select a space

Nathaniel Green Park

Nathaniel Green Park

Nathaniel Greene Park on a warm day feels like an escape from Springfield, making it the perfect place for a posh picnic. Something about it makes you want to set up an easel and paint the lake, the weeping willows, and the ducks. It is an idyllic scene for a garden party with tea and dainty white gloves that cover your wrists — it could easily be the setting for movies and books set in the 1800’s.

Set the tone

To match the beautiful setting, you need beautiful music. Choose something you wouldn’t normally listen to, that way the picnic is distinguished from other meals eaten outside. The “Feel Good Classical” playlist on Spotify is a sublime soundtrack for when you want to feel like European royalty.

Of course, once you feel like European royalty, you must also eat like European royalty. Simplicity is key — pick from the three main food groups: bread, cheese and fruit. Pack a charcuterie board in your picnic basket if you’re really in the mood to feel opulent.

Outfits

Classic, simple outfits pair best with a picnic. Being outdoors presents the need for breathable fabrics and clothing that allows free movement. A sundress and clean white sneakers are the perfect pair. Throw on a hair scarf for an effortlessly chic, pixie look.
