Minimalism in fashion has always been around but has grown increasingly popular in the past few years. To achieve a minimal wardrobe, many consumers have begun to cultivate capsule wardrobes in their closet. A capsule wardrobe is defined as a “collection of garments designed to be worn together that are harmonized in color and line.”
“Capsule wardrobe” is a term that was first coined in 1970 by boutique owner Susie Faux. A capsule wardrobe typically consists of 25-50 quality pieces of clothing that can be mixed and matched together.

Why do people have capsule wardrobes?

There are many reasons that people have created capsule wardrobes. Two huge reasons are that these wardrobes save time and money. There are so many pieces of clothing that go unused in an individual's wardrobe. You always hear people saying they have “nothing to wear” when in reality the problem is they have too many clothes to pick from, which creates stress when trying to pair clothes together.

This is the reason I have personally begun the journey of creating my own capsule wardrobe. As a fashion major, fashion is a huge part of my life. In my wardrobe I found I was always going for the same pieces over and over. Therefore I decided that instead of having a wardrobe full of clothes, I found myself more interested in having fewer items, but those items being of high quality. Personally, it is worth it to me to spend the money on pieces that may be expensive but I know I will get my use out of and will pair well with items I already have.

My favorite places to shop for items in my wardrobe are Aritzia, Skims, Lululemon and H&M. To sum up my experience of growing my capsule wardrobe, the motto “quality over quantity” is very applicable.

How to start your own capsule wardrobe?

Start with taking a long look into your closet and really evaluating what you gravitate to wearing everyday. More than likely, you probably already have 15-20 pieces of clothes that are your “go-to” items when picking out what to wear.

Get creative and see all the ways that you can pair your favorite items together. Then maybe invest in a few more items that match the colors and styles of these clothes. Slowly but surely you will begin to create your own capsule wardrobe.
