When you look into the future, what do you imagine people wearing? While many fashion trends cycle, futuristic fashion focuses on what hasn’t been done before. There are many different styles that are combined to create these extraordinary looks, such as avant- garde, extraterrestrial, cyberpunk, and techno fashions. While there is no way of knowing what the future of fashion will entail, many have played with this abstraction.

Different designers and magazines share a variety of ideas on what futuristic fashion looks like, but there beingare numerous common themes. You can expect to see many unique futuristic styles including face coverings, mirrored sunglasses, and lots of metallic, silver, and black materials. Futuristic fashion prioritizes aesthetic rather than functionality with many irregular shaped and avant- garde pieces.Vogue described futuristic outfits worn at this year's BAFTAs, with a focus on Cynthia Erivo’s bronze Louis Vuitton dress “layered with streaming rectangular paillettes, and boasted a space-age pagoda shoulder,” and Sheila Atim’s metallic dress designed by Prada. InStyle magazine wrote an article calling singer, Doja Cat, a “Futuristic Fashion Alien,” and highlighted outfits that included an avant- garde black leather bodysuit that covered everywhere besides her face, a silver wig, and a sheer bodysuit designed with small circular mirrors. We took inspiration from similarities between numerous designs to create our own

futuristic looks.

In our take of futuristic fashion, Britney Spangenberg (@nightcire.arts) photographed Nia Harrison (@eighthaitch), Nakaja Weaver (@nakajaaaa), and Alexis Stutte (@alexisstutte) modeling handmade outfits by Chanell Young (@chanell.young) for her futuristic, Y2K brand Egotisti.c (@egotisti.c). The outfits were made with metallic fabrics with irregular cutouts, and paired with big, shiny boots. To further bring out the futuristic look, we accessorized with mirrored sunglasses, gloves, and head scarves. Adding such accessories can help create a never-before-seen look. These outfits focused on eye-catching details rather than practicality, just like many seen in the Vogue and InStyle articles previously mentioned. This style is not meant to inspire everyday fashions; it is an art form.

There is no telling what future designers will create, and there is a beauty in this uncertainty. Soon enough, the future we speak of will be our present, and the predictions of what futuristic fashion might look like will change too. No matter when though, there will always be something unique waiting to be made. This just goes to show that futuristic fashion  proves that the possibilities in fashion are endless.
