Bolo Ties: The Newest Accessory Revival

The past decade has seen many revivals of retro accessories from scrunchies to statement belts, but none as timeless and classic as the bolo tie. Once reserved for Western wear and cowboy culture, bolo ties are making their way back into the accessory scene as a unique touch to any outfit. Whether you are getting ready for a night out on the town or a formal event, bolo ties are sure to lasso their way into your heart and your closet!

It’s important that we acknowledge the history behind the bolo tie and learn about its origins before deciding how to style them. Though it’s unclear who exactly created the bolo tie we recognize today, we know that the early designs of bolo ties were worn by Indigenous Americans and cowboys in the American Southwest. Those who claim to have invented the bolo tie, such as Manny Goodman and Victor Cedarstaff, all say that they observed Indigenous tribes wearing “bandanas clasped around their necks with a shell or silver conch,” and drew their inspiration from those designs. By the 1940s, bolo ties had gained significant traction in the West and were worn by many cowboy characters in TV shows. They were primarily a masculine accessory, worn with more casual suits and to informal events. They first made a comeback in the 80s in the new wave music and fashion scene and early alternative groups.

Bolo ties are returning once again, along with the rest of the Western wear resurgence we’re seeing in the fashion world. Currently, bolo ties are being accessorized with both masculine and feminine outfits. There is a wide range of bolo ties, such as smaller, daintier pieces for those who prefer smaller accessories, as well as larger ones for those who are looking for their newest statement piece. There are many different ways that a bolo tie can be used to enhance any outfit.

Casual

As of late, it’s most common to see bolo ties paired with everyday outfits. It should come as no surprise that bolo ties pair well with any denim garment. Along with the recent revival of vests, the combination of these three are the perfect way to achieve the casual cowboy look.

However, bolo ties don’t have to only be worn with a Western outfit. Depending on the style of tie you own, they can be worn in a more alternative style with a cool graphic tee and slacks, or with a long skirt and scarf top for an earthy feel. Bolo ties can also be layered with your signature necklace stack to aid in achieving the perfect maximalist look.

Formal

Traditionally, bolo ties are worn with collared shirts buttoned all the way up under a suit jacket. While this is a very classic way to wear a bolo tie, it can also be switched up and worn loosely with an unbuttoned shirt for a more modern look, or with a turtleneck for a classic 70s feel.

For a more feminine look you could also try a turtleneck, as well as any deep neckline silhouettes with a neutral-toned, fitted dress. Bolo ties are also a great addition to any outfit with a shawl or cape, especially for the colder months.

Going-out

Bolo ties are a fantastic way to play around with any neckline you have in your closet. Since the length of the strings and placement of the pendant can be adjusted, they can accentuate any neckline or sleeve type! Bolo ties can also be a more comfortable alternative to a regular necklace, since they rarely fly around or have to be adjusted. For a more masculine look, you can try a bolo tie with a loose-fitting, patterned button up and your preferred going-out bottoms. Similar to casual wear, you could style a bolo tie with a graphic tee and jeans to help make your outfit look more detailed.

By understanding the various materials, colors, and designs available, you can easily incorporate bolo ties into both casual and formal looks. Whether you opt for a classic leather style or a more contemporary design, remember to consider the overall aesthetic of your outfit, pairing it with complementary pieces. With the right approach, bolo ties can be a bold statement or a small enhancement or any outfit.
