Over the last few years, maximalism has taken over the fashion world. Bold colors, busy patterns, and elaborate silhouettes have seeped their way into recent fashion trends. The complex characteristics of maximalistic fashion stand in stark contrast to the minimalist aesthetic, which might lead some to discredit it. While some may view a minimalist approach to fashion as boring or lacking, I believe it’s important to highlight the appealing aspects of a simple wardrobe.

To those we pass on the street, our daily outfits may not seem as calculated or carefully crafted as they actually are. This is exactly why I believe minimalistic fashion gets a bad rap. Of course, we know a black top pairs well with blue jeans and a staple pair of shoes. The same goes for a white t-shirt paired with black bottoms. Or even denim on denim. However, the details of these pieces—the silhouettes, fabrics, textures, and styles—are what truly make an outfit good. Knowing which textures pair well with others, which cuts and styles suit your body type, or how to elevate a rather simple outfit are key to achieving a minimalist style.

In a time when overconsumption is continually snowballing, achieving a simple, minimalistic wardrobe seems more relevant than ever. Balancing flashy statement pieces with timeless staples prevents us from purchasing as quickly and frequently as new trends emerge. After watching a YouTube video posted by Emma Chamberlain, sharing her journey with overconsuming clothing and downsizing, I felt inspired. Of course, as a fashion fanatic, it still feels important to leave room for unique, striking pieces I may not frequently wear. Refreshing my closet with high-quality clothing that I would regularly wear was key to fixing my poor shopping and thrifting habits.

The key to achieving an effective minimalistic wardrobe is to invest in quality pieces—items that will stand the test of time. As a college student who tries to prioritize this without “breaking the bank,” my best approach has been to shop second-hand. High-quality thrifted clothing will last much longer than inexpensive fast-fashion. Additionally, shopping for elevated, versatile basics is the easiest way to transform your closet.

There have been many fashion icons throughout the years who are regularly seen in simple, chic outfits. Carolyn Besette Kennedy, who recently became relevant amongst younger generations, is one fashion icon who famously donned elevated staples in ways that never felt boring. Sade Adu, who often wore chunky jewelry and flashy accessories, dressed in timeless, minimalistic pieces throughout her entire career. Orion Carloto, a current author and influencer, is another name relevant in the discussion of minimalistic fashion icons; she’s a master at turning a simple outfit of jeans and a t-shirt into something chic. All three of these women mastered a true minimalist style. They each wore elevated essentials, neutral tones, and accessorized each outfit with jewelry, hair accessories, and jackets or coats.

Not only is a minimalist wardrobe practical and easy to achieve, it is also chic and sophisticated. Being intentional with the way we look doesn’t always translate to glitz and glam. Understanding the depth of each minimalistic outfit allows for even more appreciation for the style. Just because these looks seem simple, they truly are not. Chic minimalism is effortless on the outside, yet it is innately methodical and calculated.
