You may have heard of the Fremont Market—maybe you’ve even attended! If you are unaware of this event, the Fremont Market is a pop-up shop hosted by college students from their own yard. The vendors are all local and it is a great opportunity to support small businesses right here in Springfield.
There is something for everyone here: vintage clothing for all ages, local art, and even aguas frescas! The Fremont Market is hosting their third market this year on October 8 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The first two markets were in April and July. everything will be the same besides the addition of some new vendors! Since this will be the first market in fall, it’s a great opportunity to celebrate the season. The location is a ten minute walk from Missouri State’s campus and the neighborhood is beautiful to walk through during early fall.
You might be wondering, “why would two college students want to start a flea market in their own yard?” Sadie Nel and Piper Marler, the founders of the Fremont Market, noticed that they had a lot of mutual friends who had small businesses and thought they had the perfect house for a pop-up. The market also turned into a great opportunity to support other small businesses here in Springfield.
There are a few loyal vendors who have been attending since the first market that deserve a spotlight. 207 Trinkets is a vintage clothing booth that sells curated clothes and knick knacks, including jewelry, candles, and hand-drawn stickers, at pop-ups in the Springfield area.
KO bean is another vintage clothing vendor run by a college student. Their clothing pieces feature quirky sayings and images, all of which are made of cutout fabric sewn onto second-hand clothing items.
The last clothing vendor to mention is LUV Brand which is run by another college student, Nic Wiley. Wiley personally sews and reworks vintage clothing into a personalized style often featuring the company name “LUV.” Another vendor, Honey and Fiber Co. works with macrame weaved products, selling keychains, coasters, water bottle slings and more made with eco-friendly materials.
Last vendor to mention is Panorama Media run by a college freshman, Shyam Rama. Rama works with photography, videography and aerial media, and, if you check out the Fremont Market Instagram page you will be able to see the promo video that he made for the market showcasing the essence of the event.
There are also a few good causes to support while you enjoy the market. Artists Against Trafficking, an organization that brings awareness to human trafficking, will have a booth. There will be pamphlets and vital information on how you can help combat human trafficking. For the first time, there will be a clothing drive for you to drop off your old clothes to be donated to the Salvation Army. For every item of clothing you bring you’ll be entered to win a prize at the end of this year’s market.
