Purchasing Home Decor Second-Hand

Whether it is moving into your dorm, apartment, or house, we all know how daunting it can be to have to furnish and decorate your space. As a college student on a tight budget, thrifting home decor has not only helped my stress, but my bank account as well. Thrifting decor can also allow you to find fun and unique pieces that bring character to your space.
I love stopping by local thrift stores, antique shops, and even garage/estate sales to find the best deals on necessities for your home. These stores are filled with tons of kitchenware, decor, and furniture that can fit any aesthetic that you are envisioning for your space. Most of these pieces are in great condition or can be refurbished with a bit of care. Home decor can be insanely expensive, so it is rewarding to find pieces that look new while being half the price.
Most recently, I found the cutest plates with cats on them. They were in great condition and were only five dollars! This was such a unique find that I wouldn't have found at Target or At Home. Plus, a few days ago I found a lovely drinking glass with purses all over it for only one dollar! Another recent purchase is a green paper towel holder that had a decorative wire flower on it for four dollars! These individual pieces contain such cute details that stand out amongst other items currently sold at shopping centers. Along with the items I have just mentioned, these second-hand stores have loads of fun mugs, trinkets, blankets, etc. that can help liven up your space! The act of buying second-hand also helps the environment by reusing decor that is basically new. By purchasing these items, you are preventing them from sitting in landfills. Unfortunately, thrift stores will also throw items aways that do not get purchased. So each item you buy second-hand, is one less thing getting tossed in a landfill.
I do understand that there are just some items that people feel more comfortable buying brand new, for example, bedding or couches. That is completely understandable, but taking small strides to start purchasing second-hand will make a difference! I really encourage others to start integrating second-hand pieces that can make your space more fun! Plus, these pieces will last longer and you will not have to throw them away as quickly since they are good quality. I love how as college students, we are not only capable of acquiring unique pieces that show our personality but we are in control of helping our own wallets and the environment!
