The Malefactors

The Malefactors (pronounced Mah-leh-factors) is a three-piece Dublin band. The trio consists of frontman Lucille, drummer Wren and bassist Henry. Due to privacy concerns, members of the band have wished to be identified by first name only. The three have been releasing music since 2022, and have since released two singles and one EP.

I personally began listening to them in December of 2023. I fell in love immediately after my first listen and have supported them since. I reached out to them in March of this year asking to interview them. Luckily, they responded and I got the pleasure of talking with them and asking them about their experiences being a band. The Malefactors have known each other since they were in school together.

“We were school friends from the age of 12, and later on formed the band at 15,” they said. They have been practicing, producing and performing music together ever since. The band's name roots from an article that Wren had read and the name seemed to stick. The term “Malefactor” was originally considered a bible term from  John 18:30 the King James Version, the latter, which is the stronger term, in Luke 23:32,39 and the pronunciation came from it as well. As they continue to grow, the band looks forward to their future goals.

“We hope to release new music and tour soon.” The band, having their own unique style and sound, takes inspiration from other artists, as many others do. Mostly inspired by rock artists, the band's sound is also similar to many indie artists of today such as SignCrushesMotorist, Whatever, Dad, Indigo De Souza and many others.

Since they formed in Ireland, they have held a lot of gigs in Dublin. The Malefactors have experienced some differences between American and European venues.

“European venues, specifically Dublin city venues,  are a lot easier to get into and are more accessible for both artists and fans. The European venues also have better communication between both parties,”Wren said.

Their most recent release, an EP, features their two singles “Missing Molly” and “Cure.” Since its release in November of 2023, the EP has reached 38,922 combined plays. The band plays many live gigs throughout Dublin and Ireland and was recently invited to the Sing For Me fest on June 1-2 of this year.
