The slip dress is a timeless wardrobe staple that goes beyond fleeting trends. Slip dresses began as a simple undergarment intended for wearing beneath women’s full dresses in the Victorian Era, but have transformed over the years into sleepwear, lingerie, and now a dress for everyday wear. With this history in mind, slip dresses can be styled up or down to suit a particular occasion. Wearing slip dresses in a casual style can put a lot of people outside of their comfort zone, but I’ve found them to be a fun way to challenge my stylistic expression. If you love the look of a slip dress but aren’t sure how to style them, this lookbook is for you!

The big takeaway from the following lookbook is that it isn't necessary to partake in fast fashion to pull off slip dress looks. 100% of the pieces photographed here were purchased from a sustainable collection, second-hand source, or local small business. Vintage slip dresses bought second hand or passed down by family members add a story to a piece otherwise lacking depth and character.

Casual

I love styling slip dresses for class, the grocery store, brunch with friends, or family outings. The best way to do this is by layering a classic tee shirt beneath the dress, with sneakers or Doc Martens. For colder weather and a fall touch, add a flannel or thick, oversized cardigan.

Professional

Because of  their sophisticated and feminine nature, slip dresses are great to wear in a professional setting. Wear a shorter dress with an oversized blazer, and longer dress with a ribbed knit sweater, kitten heels, and dress socks.

Going Out

The best way to dress up a slip dress for a night out is with thigh high socks or a Y2K style baby tee layered overtop a short dress. This look is still classy but will turn heads when you walk in the building.
