History of Converse

Not many would expect a 50s basketball sneaker to become one of the most popular casual shoes, but that is exactly what Converse evolved into. Converse has been a staple in our wardrobes for over 60 years. All-Stars were released in 1917 primarily as a basketball shoe and slowly became the most common sneaker on the court by the 1960s. The first and only colorway released initially consisted of a dull brown body with black trimming, but as converse transformed into a casual tennis shoe, different color variations became available.

The first color variation was an all-black high top with white laces, released in the 20s. In 1932, the famous star heel patch was added to these shoes with the name “Chuck Taylor”. Who exactly was Chuck Taylor? Taylor was an American basketball player and sales representative for Converse. His contribution had a large part in the success of the company, so adding his name onto the heel was a well-deserved homage to him. After this modification was made, the high-tops were eventually referred to as “Chuck Taylors,” or “Chucks” as most called them.

After the late 1950s, when the low-cut oxford style was added, different versions and colorways started to appear; This was the first of many style adaptations. Converse were typically paired with cuffed dark wash jeans and leather jackets in the 50s and 60s. By the 70s, Converse released multiple colorful options: blue, red, yellow, and green were available to the masses. It was pretty common to see both men and women wearing these shoes with bell-bottoms and a button down or tank top. In the 80s, converse were typically worn with slouch socks and shorts or acid wash jeans. Since the 80s, we have seen at least 40 varying models including knee highs, platforms, and combat boot styles.

Converse are very versatile when it comes to styling nowadays. A classic pair of straight leg jeans paired with a chunky knit sweater and fun-colored converse is a go-to. Wide-leg pants and a baggy band t-shirt, with a pair of black hightops is also a staple. And my all-time favorite pairing, pleated slacks, a blouse or basic plain t-shirt, and converse. These shoes give you freedom to style them however you’d like, which might allude to their long-lasting success.

Since evolving into a casual lifestyle shoe, Converse have found its way into various styles and trends throughout the years. These shoes are a timeless piece in many of our daily outfits, and they are here to stay.
