Creating a Fashion Runway Collection

I recently had the honor of presenting my second fashion collection as the headlining designer for Omaha Fashion Week’s Fauna Designer Showcase this past fall/winter 23/24 season. This past season, I created a nine-look collection inspired by woven elements and modularity. Single-handedly creating a fashion collection is a big hurdle, especially as an undergraduate fashion design student.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Influenced a Whole Generation of Teenagers

If you’ve been on TikTok recently, you’ve likely seen people poking fun at the incredibly misogynistic, albeit very catchy song, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Ruined a Whole Generation of Women by Negative XP. In this song, the artist complains about the “manic pixie dream girl” archetype that was pushed into the mainstream by the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels and movie.

The Influence of Album Art

As music becomes increasingly integrated into the lives of Gen Z, seemingly interconnected with almost all social media platforms, it was bound to intersect into the fashion world in some way. As social media users, we follow our favorite music artists. We keep up with their latest music drops and watch as they collaborate with fashion designers to dress them for special events. Even so, we see them work together with fine artists to create album art, visuals for music videos, or graphics for merchandise. This intersection between art, fashion, and music comes full circle for all parties involved: music artists, social media users, and fine artists.

Groutfits: A Trend Beyond Sweatsuits

When you hear the term groutfit, you probably think of matching gray sweatpants and sweatshirts, but that’s not all it is. The trend of gray monochrome styles doesn’t have to remain the same as the original grunge look for when it’s your day off. Branching away from the comfy and laid back look, you can turn a groutfit into a dressy outfit or keep it casual depending on what your agenda holds.

Undergarments in Power

Visible undergarments take on the runways and everyday life; owning who you are and the underwear you wear is finally rising to the top. Society expects clothes to cover unwanted appearances of bra straps, panty lines, shapewear, and boxers. Expecting traditional outfits and limiting individuals to only dress professionally. The slogan, “Dress your age” is used as a tactic to control fashion trends and dull creativity. The rise of undergarments being exposed isn’t just for celebrities in power or on the red carpet. News flash––everyone wears underwear.

Tyler, The Creator: A Fashion Inspiration

There are three ways I would describe Tyler, The Creator: an independent thinker, a visionary, and a fashion inspiration. Tyler is not only a fashion inspiration in a visual sense, but he has taught many of his fans, including myself, the significance of self-expression through clothing. Tyler has always held a reputation as a style icon, even more so after starting his clothing and apparel companies, GOLF WANG and GOLF Le FLEUR*. Tyler’s sense of style has fluctuated throughout his career, and we tend to see this style change correlate with each album release.

A Guide to Dressing Maximalist

When you think of dressing bold, what do you think of? Colors, patterns, layers? Well, if any of those come to mind, then you’re imagining maximalism style. Maximalism, as described by Keren Richter, is “the art of more-is-more; layered patterning, highly saturated colors, ample accessories and art, and a real sense of playfulness and bold gesture.” It’s all about making a statement and expressing who you are through your clothes.

It’s Time To Talk About Outfit Repeating

A concept that has been bothering me recently is this agreement we have as a society that you should not wear the same outfit multiple times. This unspoken rule forms the idea that it is embarrassing or weird if you wear the same thing to an event that you wore to a past event. From experience, many issues emerge with this idea that you always have to be in something new. I’ve even started feeling self-conscious about my own style. Repeating outfits is something I love doing; finding a specific outfit that looks best on me naturally means I am going to wear it multiple times. I think it is quite silly to suggest that you should feel embarrassed to wear clothes that you purchase and that you feel confident in. This is something we have unfortunately normalized as a society, which is why I want to share a few reasons that we should all be outfit repeaters.

ARCHIVE FASHION: The Crucial Pieces that Shaped Fashion Today

I was ecstatic to rip open a shiny pack of Pokemon cards when I was a kid, to play with Monster High dolls, and to listen to music on my iDog MP3 player back in the 2010s. Now as a young adult in 2023, I’m reminiscing on the nostalgic items and pieces we had “back in the day”. I catch myself missing my Nike Hi-Tops, and I’m ever so grateful for my mom’s overseas acclaim for designer brands. Fashion as an art can be admired despite class or culture, and the 1990s through the 2000s has notably curated some of the most groundbreaking and original pieces; the beginning of modern craftsmanship and design. The best and most sought-after pieces coming from this era can be defined as “Archive Fashion”, and have recently been making a resurgence in popularity

Why to Embrace the Era of Dopamine Dressing

The fashion ideology of “dopamine dressing” has been around for as long as fashion has existed, and here’s why you should return to these roots.

In a nutshell, dopamine dressing is the idea that an individual dresses for themselves and what makes them happy. There is no consideration for the general public when getting dressed in the morning, and having no societally placed rules or guidelines makes an environment that fosters creativity and individuality. The goal is to reject fast fashion trends and create your own personal style.

Denim on Denim

Denim on denim… you either hate it or you love it. And right now we love it! We saw this trend begin in the late 70s to early 80s and continue to rise and fall throughout the upcoming decades. A big rise in the fad was seen in the early 2000s with celebrities jumping on the trend. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake rocked their Canadian tuxedos at the American Music Awards. Their outfits featured a fully denim dress with a train and a denim suit with a denim cowboy hat. This sparked a lot of controversy with people trying to decide whether or not their denim outfits were truly fashionable, but the majority agreed that they pulled off the bold look.
