If you’re like me and often find yourself scrolling endlessly on TikTok, you might be familiar with some of the aesthetically pleasing fashion trends, such as the “clean girl” look, or the “downtown girl” look. As trend cycles continue and the start of a new year approaches, people wonder what the next it-girl look will be. But we can’t forget about the original it-girls, Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf from the show, “Gossip Girl.”
Much of the fashion on the show reflects the wealthy and dramatic lifestyles of the characters. Throughout the show, costume designer, Eric Daman, presents both Serena and Blair with their own personal style that reflects much of their personalities.
Serena van der Woodsen’s style showcases layers, heavy jackets, low necklines, mismatched patterns, and statement jewelry pieces to match her chaotic, yet classy lifestyle. Blair Waldorf is known to be organized, independent, and professional, so the character is seen in many collared blouses, long skirts, long coats, and of course, those trusty Blair headbands we know and love.
The 2000s era of fashion may have consisted of baby tees, low-waisted cargos, and pink tracksuits, but the more upscale side of 2000s fashion seen on the show has a strong influence on some of today’s popular styles.
To modernize the fashion we see on “Gossip Girl,” you can pair a long coat or leather jacket with any basic slip dress and you’ve got a classic Serena van der Woodsen going-out look. Patterned tights can make any long, comfy sweater look like a classy Blair Waldorf shopping outfit. Accessories like belts, purses, and thick scarves can elevate any basic look and make it look like you're on the Upper East Side.
