Don’t know where to find inspiration for unpredictable outfits? Down the rabbit hole we go! In today's society, a good majority of everyday fashion is based on popular trends. If you want to try to find your own style, but have no idea where to begin, you may be looking harder than you need to. Inspiration is all around you, hiding in your favorite art, movies, and media. In this photoshoot, we created everyday outfits inspired by the classic movie “Alice in Wonderland.” We took parts of each character's unique style to create some outfits we never thought to put together before.
In order to create a look similar to Alice’s, we started with a baby blue puff dress. The dress was originally white, and we dyed it blue before this shoot. Recycling and customizing clothes you already own is a great way to create unique pieces at a low cost.
The White Rabbit plays a frantic yet sophisticated role. His outfit in the movie is business-wear inspired, with a bow tie and suit jacket. The White Rabbit also carries around a pocket-watch, which is a much older but still timeless fashion trend. In our look, we included a pocket-watch, white button-down, and a vest to capture the White Rabbit’s energy.
For the Queen of Hearts-inspired outfit, we focused on her signature color red. This look included layering a shawl over a slip dress over a skirt and a pair of heart-patterned tights. Red makeup and jewelry helped this outfit pop and tied it all together.
We took inspiration from the Cheshire Cat to create a monochrome look with patterns and cool colors. We had to try layering shirts in many different ways to find something we liked, and ended up with a unique outfit I had never thought to put together before.
The last look for this shoot was inspired by the Mad Hatter. While his bright orange hair that sticks out the sides of his hat may be his most trademark look, his mixing and matching of patterns is what makes his outfit so interesting. We started this look with a topcoat similar to the Mad Hatter’s but could also be worn in an everyday look. Next, we found patterns of different sizes that paired well together, adding other unique and quirky accessories that finalized the look.
From this single movie, we were able to create five fresh and inspiring outfits. If you were to try this same task with articles from your own closet, you would end up with even more never seen before outfits. Fashion is an art, an expression of oneself. If you ever don’t know what to wear, your favorite character or artist just might hold the answer.
