“Fearless (Taylor’s Version)”: An album full of nostalgia

“Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” is the latest release from beloved singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. The album consists of 26 tracks: 20 re-recordings of the album's original songs and six newly released songs “from the vault” that were written at the same time as the originals. Debuting at number one, the album shines as a nod to Swift’s country roots mixed with her newfound sound.

The re-recorded album is the first of many to be released. Disputes over Swift’s rights to her own music after she left her longtime recording label, Big Machine, prompted the decision to re-record her first six albums to gain control over her own music. 

“Fearless,” the original version, was released 13 years ago when Swift was just 18 years old. The songs were full of teenage heartbreak and the story of a girl who was learning about what it means to grow up. The album is one of Swift’s best, and she reminds us exactly why in “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)”.

“Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” takes listeners on an emotional journey through the eyes of someone who is reflecting on their life. Lyrics in the album find new meanings when sung by the much older and wiser Swift looking back on her teenage years. The raw emotion that comes from lyrics written by a teenager being sung by a now 31 year old Swift is what really makes this album so special. Elements of Swift’s younger and current self blend together to bring the perfect amount of nostalgia in every track. 

Composition wise, the album hits every mark. It can clearly be seen why Taylor has had three number one albums in less than a year's time. Each song stands out as a unique piece of art with delicate lyrics about love and loss that are backed with perfect instrumentals that take listeners back to the original versions of these songs. 

The choice of “Fearless” being the first of the re-recordings was an extremely wise decision. No other album of Swift’s has aged as well as this one. The album contains many of long time fans’ favorite songs, a couple of Swift’s most well known songs, and enough songs that even those who have never listened to Swift can find something they enjoy.

Swift has not yet announced plans for what album’s re-recording will be released next, but many believe the year will be filled with even more new Taylor Swift songs and albums.
