In Southwest Missouri, line dancing is one of the most popular forms of dancing. Whether you’re at Club Rodeo or a local bar, line dancing offers the perfect blend of movement, rhythm, and community.
Part of line dancing's rising popularity is credited to its accessibility. Most line dances are choreographed to hit songs that the general masses know, and once you learn the basic steps, you can jump into countless dances. Typically, dances are categorized by difficulty, making it easy for beginners and experienced dancers alike to find something for their own comfort level.
For those new to the dance floor, “Take It Off” by Kesha is a great beginner-friendly routine: it's simple, repetitive, and high-energy. Ideal for gaining confidence in your dancing and learning to have fun with the routines. For a bit more of a challenge, Rihanna’s “S&M” requires quicker transitions and more intricate footwork. Lastly, to those who dare… “Sin Wagon” by The Chicks is a fast-paced, advanced routine that will be sure to impress those around you.
Of course, half the fun of line dancing is attributed to its fashion. While you don’t need to dress in a full Jack Twist get-up, a few classic pieces can help you feel right at home on the dance floor. Boots are a staple for any line dancer, as they provide stability and flair. Additionally, a traditional Western-style belt helps to keep everything in place while jumping and stomping. Lastly, a good old cowboy hat adds an undeniable amount of swag to your line dancing look. (Ok, I lied, you do need to look like Jack Twist).
Line dancing transcends the boundaries of a fun routine on a disco-ball-lit dance floor—it becomes a statement about expression, music, and shared experiences. So, grab your friends, pull on your boots, and head to your nearest line-dancing spot. Go on that dance floor and give it your loudest YEE-HAW!
