Winter in Missouri, as many residents here know, is a fickle thing: some years it’s as mild and temperate as can-be, some years it’s frigid arctic wind and mountains of snow, and more often than not, it’s somewhere in between. This can make outings with friends and general nightlife much more difficult to plan around, since that cold air gets even worse when the sun goes down. No amount of warmth from something to drink will keep you safe in temps below freezing. But just because it’s looking to be a cold one this year doesn’t mean you have to put away the party clothes and get ready for hibernation, there are plenty of ways to go about having a night on the town while looking good, staying warm, and staving off frostbite in the process.
Know Your Vibe
Where are you going? What are you actually doing on your night out? Seeing a movie at the local theater? Bowling with friends? Watching a sports game? Narrowing down the plan usually leads to a quicker solution, and outfits work the same way. Instead of focusing on whatever you own that’s the cutest, choose what makes sense for where you’re going. It sounds obvious, but there’s always someone complaining about freezing at a hockey game or feeling awkward being the only one in a T-shirt. Ask yourself a few questions before picking an outfit for a night out: (1) What’s the temperature going to be when I get there? (2) What impression do I want to make? (3) What will I feel the most comfortable in? Comfort is the foundation of confidence, and confidence is what actually lets you enjoy yourself. Whether you’re heading to a club, a movie, a sports game, or anywhere in between, answering these questions will help you walk out the door feeling prepared and looking your best.
Where to Go
Activities that are explicitly outdoors just aren’t worth it without something to keep everyone warm, which just makes clubs, bars, halls, and house parties all the more enticing. Places like Lindberg's Tavern, The Regency Live, Martha’s Vineyard, and Club Rodeo are all well-known spots to keep warm and have fun, but even smaller locations around town are worth the trip out into the cold. Springfield is home to plenty of fun night-out options, no matter what vibe you’re looking for. For movie lovers, Moxie Cinema, College Station Theater, and The Alamo Drafthouse are reliable go-tos, while the historic Gillioz Theatre downtown offers everything from independent films to performing arts. If bowling is more your speed, Enterprise Park Lanes, Sunshine Lanes, and Andy B’s all offer solid pricing and a lively atmosphere. You can also switch it up with a night at Blue Room Comedy Club, BigShots Golf, or Billiards, perfect spots to eat, drink, and play pool with friends or family. Downtown is packed with bars and clubs like The Flea, Martha’s Vineyard, and Lindberg’s Tavern, each offering its own unique crowd and aesthetic. And for live music fans, The Regency Live keeps weekends packed with concerts, DJs, and themed events. Whether you’re craving craft cocktails, a full dance floor, or a night of bar hopping, Springfield has plenty of places to make your night out unforgettable.
What to Wear
Given the weather’s fickle nature, attire necessary for staying warm changes night to night. Only in Missouri, it seems, does a week have both days where the high is 46°F and other days where it’s 76°F. However, nights canstill always get cold, so even if you dress for the high that day, a backup jacket or coat is a must-have for any type of nightlife. Layers are a must, but on those cold winter nights where the inside of a bar or club is nice and warm, those layers can feel smothering. One suggestion which can help with this is normal attire for going out underneath, and a trenchcoat over top. That way, staying warm outside and staying comfortable inside is just a matter of taking the trenchcoat off, since you can even wear shorts or a skirt underneath and it’ll still keep your legs safe from the elements because of its length.
However, for those of us who welcome the winter, the possibility for stylish layering is endless. Sweaters, cardigans, jeans, long skirts, coats, denims, wool beanies, scarves, and so much more. When going out to the theater, it’s also smart to avoid anything shorter than knee-length so your skin isn’t sticking to the seat. The great thing about theaters is that you’re in the dark most of the time, so casual looks fit right in. But if you’re headed to a premiere, or just want to make the night feel a little special, dressing up can be a fun break from the usual. For more active settings—like a sports game, arcade, or bowling—stick with comfortable shoes and avoid heels or wedges. Jeans with a fitted top or stylish athleisure (such as joggers and a cropped hoodie) work great, as long as the fabrics are breathable and easy to move in. Avoid long sleeves; wearing a jacket instead is better because you can take it off if you get warm and adjust to the temperature throughout the night. When you’re heading to a club or party scene, always check if there’s a dress code before you even think about what to wear. Many clubs won’t allow sneakers, so swap them out for a cute pair of boots or heels that match your outfit. Form-fitted clothing is the go-to here—think tight dresses, mini skirts, corset tops, or a sleek tank-and-skirt combo. Nightclubs are darkly lit, so neon pieces help you stand out, while darker colors paired with a bold statement accessory can create the perfect spotlight moment. If you want to elevate your look even more, go for fabrics that catch the light like satin, leather, sequins, or mesh overlays. A subtle shimmer on your makeup or body oil can also reflect the club lights in the best way. Crossbody bags are usually a no-go on the dance floor, so choose a small clutch or wristlet you can keep close. And don’t forget breathable fabrics and secure tops– you’ll appreciate it once you start dancing.
Don’t Forget Your Essentials
Keep your ID, keys, and a few must-haves—hair ties, safety pins, a portable phone charger, and some cash—in a small bag or wallet you can easily carry. When planning your night, reserve lanes, tables, or tickets ahead of time, and always double-check event times and traffic. If you’ll be drinking, schedule a rideshare beforehand so you’re not scrambling later. Safety should always come first: stay with your group, never leave your drink unattended, and share your location with a friend. And if you’re trying to save money, take advantage of happy hour deals, weekday discounts for movies or bowling, and split rides or parking with friends to keep the night fun without draining your wallet. This winter is going to be a cold one, so stay warm and try to have some fun while doing it!
